The general elections held on November 10 marked a significant milestone for the Mouvement militant mauricien (MMM), signaling the end of a prolonged period of political obscurity for the party. Since the elections on July 3, 2005, the MMM had not participated in any government.

However, with the formation of the Alliance du Changement, which achieved a historic sweep of 60 parliamentary seats, the MMM successfully placed all 19 of its candidates within the ruling majority.

This remarkable outcome positions the party with substantial influence in the new government.

The MMM now possesses the number of seats required to secure a three-quarter majority in the National Assembly, paving the way for significant reforms deemed necessary by the Alliance du Changement.

The coalition is aiming to modernize the Constitution and strengthen the nation’s institutions, as outlined in its electoral manifesto.

Paul Bérenger, the longstanding leader of the MMM, participated in his twelfth election this year. Since his first election in 1976 for constituency No. 18 (Belle-Rose/Quatre-Bornes), he has steadily increased his political influence.

On November 10, he was elected for the eighth time in constituency No. 19 (Stanley/Rose Hill), securing first place for the sixth time in this area.

Meanwhile, the MMM’s Secretary-General, Rajesh Bhagwan, reinforced his position in constituency No. 20 (Beau-Bassin/Petite-Rivière) by achieving his tenth consecutive victory.

This accomplishment sets him apart in Mauritian political history as the only individual to achieve such a remarkable feat.

As the MMM steps back into government, the party’s leaders and supporters are poised to implement their vision of reform and modernization, heralding a new chapter in Mauritian politics.
