After enduring a decade-long political exile marked by consecutive electoral defeats in 2014 and 2019, Navin Ramgoolam, the leader of the Labour Party (PTr), has successfully reclaimed a significant position in Mauritian politics by defeating Pravind Jugnauth, a leader previously regarded as nearly invincible.

Ramgoolam’s return to power came after a challenging period during which his leadership was frequently questioned, and his political ambitions appeared to be all but extinguished.

In 2019, he faced a disappointing result in his bid to represent constituency No. 10 (Montagne-Blanche/Grande-Rivière Sud-Est).

This was not merely a struggle against electoral outcomes; it was compounded by a series of legal battles that tarnished his image.

He faced serious allegations, including the discovery of Rs 220 million in cash stashed in his safe, which severely impacted his reputation.

Although these allegations were later dismissed, Ramgoolam continues to face legal challenges, including a hearing scheduled for November 14, 2024, where he will contest legal provisions that he argued infringe upon his constitutional rights.

These judicial troubles have not only damaged his public persona but have also fueled internal dissent within the PTr.

Despite these challenges, Ramgoolam exhibited resilience against various internal challenges to his leadership.

Notably, he faced significant opposition from figures such as Arvin Boolell in 2015, along with others like Satish Faugoo and Devanand Ritoo, who expressed their concerns regarding his capability to lead the party.

Nevertheless, over time, he strategically consolidated his power, successfully bringing some of his critics back into his fold while asserting himself as the singular leader capable of countering Jugnauth and the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM).

The relationship between Ramgoolam and Jugnauth has been characterized by persistent animosity, especially during the latter’s tenure as a leader.

Utilizing state resources, Jugnauth has often sought to undermine Ramgoolam’s credibility, launching personal attacks that have targeted Ramgoolam’s health and private life.

In response to these antagonistic tactics, Ramgoolam recognized that unifying the opposition was essential to regain political ground.

However, this strategy of alliance-building was fraught with complications.

Following the 2019 elections, Ramgoolam managed to ally with the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) and the PMSD, yet the dynamics with these partners were not always amicable.

The PMSD’s exit from the alliance in 2024 initially appeared to be a significant setback for Ramgoolam.

However, it ultimately prompted him to reassess his strategy, leading him to establish connections with dissidents from the PMSD under the banner of the New Democrats (ND) and to collaborate with the leftist party Rezistans ek Alternativ.

This strategic pivot enabled Ramgoolam to reconstruct his coalition and reinvigorate his campaign, despite facing considerable criticism.

His return to the political scene has been marked by enthusiastic rallies across multiple constituencies, signaling a resurgence of interest and support from segments of the electorate.

What seemed like a disadvantage with the PMSD’s departure in April 2024 has, in fact, turned into a strategic advantage, positioning Ramgoolam more favorably to challenge Jugnauth once again.
