Election Concerns Raised at Bel-Air/Rivière-Sèche Meeting
During a campaign rally for the Alliance du Changement in Bel-Air/Rivière-Sèche on Thursday evening, November 7, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party (PTr), expressed serious concerns about potential electoral irregularities ahead of the upcoming elections on November 10.
Dr. Ramgoolam revealed that a senior government official had informed him of alleged schemes aimed at manipulating the upcoming election results.
Although he did not disclose the official’s name, he shared a past experience in which the same official had sent him a letter post-2019 elections, claiming that he had been cheated out of 6,000 votes.
At that time, the official remarked that regardless of where he stood as a candidate—even on a sparsely populated island—he would have lost by the same margin.
This time, Dr. Ramgoolam claimed the official warned him that 8,000 votes could be manipulated against him.
He urged his supporters to remain undeterred by such tactics, stating, “Do whatever you want.
With this immense surge of support we have generated, you will not succeed. I issue a warning: I know the names of those who conspired against me.
I am aware of the methods you used to rob me of victory in the past. You will not be able to pull the same stunt this time.”
In his address, Dr. Ramgoolam also discussed the strategic placement of Shakeel Mohamed as the third-ranking member of the government, drawing historical parallels to the early days of independence in 1967.
He remarked that if Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam had not formed an alliance with Sir Abdool Razack Mohamed, Mauritius might not have achieved independence.
He noted that with the appointment of Mohamed’s grandson to a significant position in the government, there is now a concerted campaign against them.
“Today, we are fighting for a second independence, so we can truly breathe in our own country,” he emphasized.
The three candidates from the Alliance du Changement for constituency No. 10—Reza Saumtally, Avinash Ramtohul, and Chetan Baboolall—also spoke at the rally, encouraging the crowd to vote collectively to “liberate the country.”
Former Minister of Social Security, Vishnu Bundhun, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of vigilance against potential electoral misconduct.
He reiterated, “We must remain alert and ensure that no unfair practices occur. We will keep a close watch.”
