Moustass Leaks: Bar Council Responds & Promises Appropriate Action
In response to the recent “Moustass Leaks,” the Bar Council of Mauritius has issued a statement addressing the troubling revelations contained within audio recordings involving interactions among various figures in the judicial system, including lawyers.
The Bar Council emphasized the fundamental rights enjoyed by all Mauritian citizens, stating that these include the right to privacy and freedom of expression.
They underscored that any violations of these rights, particularly through the interception of private communications, must adhere strictly to the provisions of the Constitution.
While acknowledging the public’s distress over these disclosures, the Bar Council clarified that it cannot suspend or disbar a member without a Supreme Court ruling that establishes serious ethical misconduct, as stipulated by the Mauritius Bar Association Act.
The Bar Council asserted that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary actions, including investigations into its members, as permitted by law.
At this point, they clarified that they are unable to comment on the authenticity of the audio files involved.
