Man Arrested with Rs 29.4 Million Worth of Cannabis at Airport
A British national was apprehended at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Friday, November 1, after customs officials discovered 19.6 kilograms of cannabis concealed in his luggage. The suspect, 58-year-old Steven Michael Broom, arrived on flight EK 703, which originated in Thailand and made a stop in Dubai.
The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs 29.4 million, highlighting the extensive nature of drug trafficking operations in the region.
Customs officials from the Anti-Narcotics Section of the Mauritius Revenue Authority intercepted Broom upon his arrival.
They had already implemented specific measures aimed at deterring illicit activities, suggesting prior intelligence regarding potential drug smuggling.
Reports indicated that Broom intended to stay at a luxury hotel in Poste-Lafayette, raising further suspicions about his intentions and possible local connections.
Following his arrest, Broom was transferred to the Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport for further investigation.
L’Express‘ sources reveal that ADSU had planned a “controlled delivery” operation to trace the drug trafficking network, aiming to identify accomplices involved.
However, Broom’s refusal to cooperate with authorities led to the cancellation of this critical operation.
With the current election campaign underway, government authorities are emphasizing their commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety.
Increased vigilance and collaboration among various government agencies have been highlighted as essential strategies to dismantle drug trafficking networks and protect society from the risks associated with drug abuse.
