Elections 2024: Regulations Reminder Regarding Employee Leave
As the 2024 legislative elections approach, employers are being reminded of their obligations under the “Elections (Leave of Absence to Employees) Regulations” of 1959. According to these regulations, every individual with the right to vote must be allowed to take up to three hours of leave from work on election day to cast their vote.
Importantly, this three-hour period does not include the time required for travel between the workplace and the polling station, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to exercise their voting rights.
The Electoral Commission has issued a statement highlighting these requirements and has provided the voting hours for different regions:
- Mauritius: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- Rodrigues: 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Agalega: 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM
Employers are urged to ensure that their employees are well-informed of this entitlement. Failure to comply with this regulation could result in a fine of up to Rs 500.
It is essential for employers to facilitate their employees’ participation in the democratic process by providing the necessary time off to vote.
