Supreme Court to Hear Urgent Request Against Social Media Suspension

On Friday, November 1, 2024, attorney Kailash Trilochun, who is also a candidate for the Linion Reform party in the upcoming general elections, filed an urgent appeal with the Supreme Court to contest a directive issued by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA).

The ICTA had ordered the suspension of all social media platforms until November 11, 2024, citing national security concerns stemming from illegal leaks.

Through his attorney, Razhany Rangasamy, Trilochun has sought a “mandatory injunction” to compel the ICTA to restore access to social media in Mauritius.

He argues that the ICTA’s directive constitutes a serious violation of fundamental freedoms, particularly the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution.

Trilochun emphasized that the complete blockade of social media is restricting citizens’ right to information, which is especially critical during an election period.

A decision from the Supreme Court is anticipated soon.
