Social Media Suspension: “The Situation is Serious,” Says Ramgoolam
Navin Ramgoolam, the leader of the Alliance du Changement, expressed deep concern over the outgoing government’s decision to suspend access to social media until November 11. “The situation is serious,” he stated during a press conference on Friday afternoon, November 1.
He described the move as a violation of free speech and an alarming attempt to restrict citizens’ rights.
Ramgoolam criticized the government’s decision as a reaction of a “panic-stricken” administration, already embroiled in controversy due to allegations of espionage.
He accused the government of undermining democracy with this action. “Do not give in to provocation,” he urged his supporters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic values.
This suspension was announced by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) in a statement released on Friday, November 1.
The ICTA indicated it had received instructions to direct internet service providers to block social media platforms until November 11, citing “illegal postings that pose a serious threat to national security and public safety.”
