Government Enforces Temporary Social Media Suspension, Users Left Without Access
This morning, November 1, many internet users in Mauritius were taken aback when they found themselves unable to access popular social media platforms. The disruption stems from a directive issued by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) instructing telecommunications operators to suspend access to all social media sites until November 11, 2024.
This drastic measure was implemented in response to concerns over “illegal publications that may threaten national security and public safety.”
In a statement released by Emtel, one of the leading telecommunications companies in Mauritius, the operator confirmed the receipt of this directive on the evening of October 31, 2024.
The communication from ICTA highlighted the need to address illegal postings that could potentially affect both national security and public safety.
“As a licensed telecommunications operator, Emtel is obligated to comply with directives issued by the ICTA,” the statement read.
The company is currently undertaking the necessary steps to implement the suspension, which is expected to gradually disrupt user experiences as access to social media platforms is curtailed.
Emtel acknowledged the inconvenience this suspension will cause its customers.
However, the company emphasized that compliance with the ICTA’s directive leaves it with no alternative course of action.
“We understand the disruption this may cause and are aware of the challenges it presents for our users,” said a spokesperson for Emtel.
The company has expressed its commitment to working closely with the ICTA, governmental authorities, and its legal advisors to explore options for minimizing the impact of this directive while still addressing national security concerns.
Emtel assured its customers that it remains dedicated to adhering to all regulatory requirements while continuing to provide reliable services.
As the situation develops, many users and stakeholders are left to ponder the implications of such a sweeping measure on communication, free expression, and access to information in Mauritius.
