Government Enforces Temporary Social Media Suspension, Users Left Without Access

The disruption stems from a directive issued by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) instructing telecommunications operators to suspend access to all social media sites until November 11, 2024.

This drastic measure was implemented in response to concerns over “illegal publications that may threaten national security and public safety.”

In a statement released by Emtel, one of the leading telecommunications companies in Mauritius, the operator confirmed the receipt of this directive on the evening of October 31, 2024.

“As a licensed telecommunications operator, Emtel is obligated to comply with directives issued by the ICTA,” the statement read.

However, the company emphasized that compliance with the ICTA’s directive leaves it with no alternative course of action.
