MBC Summoned to Supreme Court on Monday November 4
The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has been ordered to appear before the Supreme Court next Monday, Nov 4, following a ruling made this afternoon, October 30. This development arised from a request by Shakeel Mohamed, who is seeking the right to respond to remarks made during a press conference by Somduth Dulthumun that aired on MBC on October 20.
Shakeel Mohamed, a candidate from the Alliance du Changement, claiming that the broadcast included inappropriate allegations and comments regarding him, linked to a video he previously shared on social media.
Initially, he had requested a right of reply from the MBC; however, his request was dismissed by the MBC’s Board of Directors.
In response to this rejection, Shakeel Mohamed, represented by his attorney, Me Pazhany Rangasamy, took legal action.
Earlier today, October 30, Juge Prameeta Goordyal-Chittoo ordered the MBC to explain in court coming Monday why Shakeel Mohamed’s request for a right of reply should not be granted.
This case is highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding media representation and the rights of individuals to defend themselves against public allegations.
