Police Brutality Complaints Surge: IPCC Records 4,259 Cases Since 2018

Since its establishment in 2018, the Independent Police Complaint Commission (IPCC), the body responsible for investigating allegations of police brutality, has received a staggering 4,259 complaints. This figure was recently revealed by outgoing Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in response to a parliamentary question posed by MP Ashley Ittoo on June 25, 2024.

While some argue that police brutality has been a longstanding issue, contemporary technology and social media have played a pivotal role in exposing these unlawful behaviors.

The widespread sharing of incidents has heightened public awareness and scrutiny of police conduct.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Jugnauth acknowledged the troubling statistics but stated, “As the statistics show, the measures taken by the police are yielding results.

Nevertheless, each case is unacceptable.” His comments reflect a commitment to improving the situation surrounding police accountability and public trust in law enforcement.
