Dr. Vinesh Sewsurn, President of the Federation of Civil Service and Other Unions, has launched a strong critique regarding the compensation offered to civil servants involved in the upcoming general elections. He described the payments as “an insult to civil servants,” emphasizing the significant work they undertake throughout the electoral process, particularly on polling day and during vote counting.

During a press conference held on Thursday, October 25, Dr. Sewsurn lamented what he deemed a “derisory” remuneration package for civil servants, especially given the extensive hours they dedicate over the course of three consecutive days.

He highlighted the example of a Poll Clerk, who is set to receive a mere Rs 4,800 for their efforts. “It is essential that their compensation is revisited,” he insisted.

Further advocating for the welfare of election officials, Dr. Sewsurn called for proper planning to alleviate the burdens faced by these workers on election days.

He specifically urged the Electoral Commission to provide “hot meals” to officials, as they often lack the opportunity to step away from their duties to procure food or rely on family members to bring them supplies.

Moreover, Dr. Sewsurn addressed potential disruptions expected on November 11, the day of the vote count, suggesting that the government should declare a public holiday or allow employees to leave work at midday.

He raised concerns that the anticipated crowds and activities could pose challenges for personnel managing the electoral process.
