On Nomination Day, a total of 903 candidates have submitted their applications to contest in the general elections scheduled for November 10. This is marking a significant increase compared to previous years, reflecting heightened political engagement among potential candidates.

Notably, constituency number 5, covering the areas of Pamplemousses and Triolet, stands out with an impressive 151 candidates lodged for the elections.

This figure not only set a record for the constituency but also accounts for 16.72% of all candidates across 21 constituencies in the country.

For context, in the last elections held in 2019, constituency number 5 witnessed just 83 candidates vying for election.

Among the prominent figures in the 5th constituency is outgoing Minister Soodesh Callichurn, who is actively campaigning for re-election.

He will be facing off against significant competition, including Navin Ramgoolam, the leader of the Alliance du Changement and a former Prime Minister.

Following constituency number 5, constituency number 10 (Montagne-Blanche/GRSE) ranks second with 71 candidates.

Meanwhile, constituency number 12 (Mahébourg/Plaine-Magnien) has attracted 60 candidates, making it the third most contested area.

In contrast, Rodrigues, designated as the 21st constituency, has the fewest candidates, with just 14 individuals registered. Constituency number 1 (GRNO/Port-Louis-Ouest) and constituency number 19 (Stanley/Rose-Hill) are closely following, each with 25 candidates in the running.

As the election date approaches, the political landscape is rapidly evolving, with constituency number 5 showcasing a particularly vibrant competition among a diverse pool of candidates.
