Phone Tapping: Reactions from Alliance of Change Leaders
“How can a government resort to phone tapping and monitor its own police commissioner?” This question was raised by Navin Ramgoolam, the leader of the Labour Party, in response to a media inquiry on Saturday, October 19.
Ramgoolam expressed that he has yet to review the recordings but is deeply shocked by the revelations, stating that “the entire island of Mauritius is in shock.”
In a parallel reaction, Paul Bérenger, leader of the Mauves Movement (MMM), condemned the situation, asserting that the outgoing government has “violated the law.”
He further warned that “in the near future, the outgoing government will use artificial intelligence to manipulate conversations.”
It is noteworthy that neither Ramgoolam nor Bérenger have confirmed that the voices captured in the recordings belong to them.
Both leaders believe that the outgoing government is “drowning and desperate” in its attempts to manage the situation.
Addressing the election campaign, Bérenger highlighted that the Alliance of Change has made a “strong start,” in stark contrast to the Lepep Alliance.
He criticized the candidate selection of the governing Alliance, particularly focusing on the candidates running alongside Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in the number 8 district, labeling this decision as “suicidal.”
Moreover, Bérenger stated, “We will remain vigilant until the last minute; we must not be overconfident.”
He announced that the Alliance of Change will reveal its list of 60 candidates on Monday, October 21, with the event scheduled to take place at the Ravenela Hotel in Balaclava.
