As victims of the Sunkai Ponzi scheme await their refunds, they are considering a public protest due to the authorities’ inaction and slow response. An ultimatum has been issued: the victims expect to be reimbursed by November 15, 2024. If no action is taken, they will take to the streets.

“Without action or response from the government, we will have no choice but to demonstrate. This is a human tragedy,” declared Salim Muthy, a social worker, during a press conference on October 14, 2024.

The conference addressed the plight of those affected by the fraudulent operations of Sunkai, as well as other companies.

Joining Muthy at the press conference were attorney Kaviraj Bokhoree and lawyers Anas Sakhawoth and Arshad Gassita.

They expressed outrage over the extensive delays in reimbursing the victims of Sunkai. Bokhoree noted that more than three years have passed since the Intermediate Court ruled in favor of repaying several victims.

He also referenced a recent Supreme Court decision, dated July 18, 2024, which ordered the seizure of over Rs 609 million from the couple Bhimla and Mohit Ramloll, who were implicated in the scam.

Bokhoree criticized the lack of response from the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance regarding letters sent that urged compensation for the victims.

“The suggestions we made have yielded no results, and it feels like we are being ignored,” he said.

Salim Muthy pointed out that the victims have been waiting over 11 years for their funds.

“This is not the government’s money; it’s the money that has been confiscated from them,” emphasized Muthy.

Despite the prolonged wait, he stated that the victims remain hopeful of receiving their refunds.

Muthy also expressed a desire to meet with prominent political figures, including Navin Ramgoolam and Roshi Bhadain, to discuss potential solutions for the victims.

He voiced hope that reason would prevail and a resolution could be reached to help these individuals reclaim their lost funds.

In related developments, Bhimla Ramloll, the former director of Sunkai, was sentenced to eight years in prison for fraud and money laundering by the Financial Crimes Division (FCD) on May 15, 2023.

Her husband, Mohit Ramloll, received a three-month prison sentence for his involvement.
