Concerns Raised Over Return of Chief Executive to Flacq District Council

Following the announcement by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth that Vikram Hurdoyal would be the candidate for the Montagne-Blanche–Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est constituency (No. 10), the Chief Executive (CE), Dheeraj Gopaul, has returned to his position at the Flacq District Council. In his absence, Dheerendra Reechaye had taken on the role of CE at the Grand-Port District Council.

This unexpected transfer raised questions, particularly given the historical trend of limited personnel changes during a Parliament dissolution period.

Several members of the Flacq District Council are questioning the timing of the CE’s return.

One councilor noted that there is currently an ongoing investigation into the procurement of garbage bins.

This investigation was initially assigned to the Independent Commission Against Corruption, which has since been succeeded by the Financial Crimes Commission.

The councilor pointed out that the contract for the purchase of approximately 10,000 garbage bins was signed by the returning CE.

He argued that the authorities acted appropriately in transferring him to ensure that the investigation can proceed transparently.

Reports indicated that hundreds of these bins remained undelivered, with many still stored at the council’s facilities and other locations.
