2024 Legislative Elections: Response related to ‘2nd Republic’ Concept
The discussion surrounding the idea of a “Second Republic” has resurfaced during the ongoing election campaign for the 2024 legislative elections. According to Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, the emergence of Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA), which is allied with the Labour Party and the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), is primarily focused on constitutional changes.
During a regional committee meeting in Petit-Verger, Jugnauth expressed that these parties are persistently contemplating the establishment of a Second Republic.
In response, Ashok Subron from ReA firmly refuted the Prime Minister’s claims.
Speaking on RadioPlus on the afternoon of October 14, Subron stated, “That is completely false.”
He elaborated that the term “Second Republic” does not appear in the electoral agreement signed by the four allied parties.
He further emphasized that there is no mention of implementing a presidential system, similar to the one introduced in 2014.
Subron went on to articulate that their goal is to obtain a three-quarters majority to facilitate constitutional reforms, which include the right to revoke the mandate of a parliamentarian who has failed to fulfill their duties.
