Muvman Liberater Faces Turmoil: 2 Resignations in 3 Days
The Muvman Liberater (ML) party has recently experienced significant upheaval with the resignation of two prominent figures in just three days. Following the departure of Deputy Speaker and ML member Zahid Nazurally on Monday evening- October 7, Ismaël Rawoo, the party’s Deputy Leader and former Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), announced his resignation on Wednesday night, October 9.
In a letter addressed to his former leader, Ivan Collendavelloo, Rawoo cited his decision as the result of “thorough reflection on my political future and the principles I wish to uphold.”
He expressed his concerns about the ML’s subordinate position within the current political alliance.
According to Rawoo, the party has struggled for years to advocate for its priorities or advance the interests of its members and supporters.
He pointed out that this dependency has significantly weakened their ability to act autonomously and to meet the legitimate expectations of their voter base.
Rawoo emphasized that it has now been four years since the ML has had a meaningful role in government.
Despite their efforts and sacrifices, he noted that the party is frequently excluded from strategic decision-making, which has seriously undermined their influence and diminished their capacity to represent their members and supporters effectively.
With a background as a dentist, Rawoo mentioned that he has continuously worked in his constituency (number 13, Rivière-des-Anguilles–Souillac) “without adequate support from the ML.”
Speculation arises as to whether he plans to join another political party or if his resignation stems from frustration over not receiving a second candidacy for the upcoming elections.
Attempts were made to reach Rawoo for clarification, but he was unavailable for comment throughout the day.
According to l’Express sources close to him, Rawoo had made efforts to remain in his constituency.
He had expressed a desire to collaborate with his fellow candidates, Padayachy and Jagutpal, for a second term.
However, various challenges arose, including the emergence of Alan Ganoo’s ally, Parwez Nunnoo, in his stronghold.
Rawoo had previously stated that it was understood that two candidacies for the southern constituency would be allocated to the Militant Socialist Movement, leaving the third for the ML. Yet, it appears that recent plans have shifted.
The former PPS hinted to supporters that he might be reassigned. He believed he would secure a candidacy in constituency number 10 (Montagne-Blanche–Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est), but ultimately felt sidelined, leading to a sense of humiliation.
For context, the names of the candidates for constituency number 10 for the Alliance Lepep were announced on Wednesday – October 7, with Vikram Hurdoyal, dentist Vikesh Sohodeb, and accountant Sameer Chitbahal slated for candidacy.
The political landscape now awaits to see who will accompany Kailesh Jagutpal and Renganaden Padayachy in constituency number 13 as this political drama unfolds within the Muvman Liberater.
