Historic Alliance Formed Ahead of Upcoming Elections
In a significant political development, an alliance dubbed the “Alliance du changement” was officially formed yesterday, October 10, as prominent leaders from four major parties came together to sign a formal agreement regarding their collaboration for the upcoming legislative elections. The parties involved include the Labour Party, the Mauritian Militant Movement, the New Democrats, and Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA).
During a press conference, Navin Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party, described the agreement as “historic,” emphasizing that these four parties, which emerged from the opposition, now stand united against those who have been in power.
“Our goal is to free the country from the clutches of the ‘mafiosi’ and to rejuvenate the economy and citizens’ purchasing power,” he stated.
Ramgoolam also addressed concerns related to the upcoming elections, referencing a letter from the Prime Minister’s office dated October 7, which discussed the shifting of polling places for the elections scheduled on November 10.
He expressed intentions to seek clarification from the electoral commission about these changes, insisting on the necessity of ensuring transparent and fair electoral processes.
Additionally, Ramgoolam confirmed that Kugan Parapen from ReA would be standing as a candidate in constituency No. 1 (Grande-Rivière-Nord-Ouest–Port-Louis-Ouest).
Richard Duval, another key figure in the alliance, remarked on the challenging nature of negotiations that led to this coalition, yet expressed satisfaction in welcoming ReA into the fold.
He credited both Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger, the leader of the Mauritian Militant Movement, for their experience and wisdom in guiding this alliance to fruition.
Ashok Subron emphasized the historical significance of the upcoming elections, asserting that they would mark a pivotal moment for the nation.
He noted that the alliance aims to incorporate the voices of the youth and the “digital generation.”
Subron highlighted priority areas outlined in the signed agreement, which include labor rights and ecological matters, as well as upcoming reparations for issues like the reclamation of the public beach at Pomponette and support for victims of the Wakashio shipwreck.
Paul Bérenger characterized the day as “very important for the country,” expressing his delight at the alliance’s formation.
He announced the candidates for constituency No. 1, including Fabrice David, Kugan Parapen, and Arianne Navarre-Marie.
Bérenger also mentioned Jasmine Toulouse, who was initially considered as a candidate, suggesting there may still be a pathway for her participation in the alliance’s efforts.
As part of the process, the Alliance du changement has registered with the Electoral Commission. In response to a press inquiry, Ramgoolam indicated that the candidate list is nearing completion.
He was also questioned about any potential collaboration with Zahid Nazurally and Ismaël Rawoo after their resignation from the Muvman Liberater party.
While he noted that there had been no direct contact, Ramgoolam welcomed anyone interested in assisting the alliance. “The door is open for all who wish to help,” he remarked.
When asked about discontent in constituency No. 6 (Grand-Baie–Poudre-d’Or), Ramgoolam maintained his focus solely on the alliance’s objectives.
