The KFC building located in La Chaussée is scheduled to be demolished in four weeks, as announced by Lord Mayor Issop Nujuraully during a press conference at the municipal headquarters on October 11. This decision was followed by a mutually agreeable settlement reached between KFC and the municipality.

“Lucky enough, the director of KFC has finally recognized the urgency of clearing the Ruisseau du Pouce. Although the negotiations were challenging, reason prevailed in the end,” Nujuraully stated.

He confirmed that the municipality has awarded the demolition contract, and work is already underway at the site.

The demolition aligned with the recommendations outlined in a report from the Fact-Finding Committee, chaired by former judge Bhushan Domah, which was released in 2008 following deadly floods in March of that year.

It is also adhering to the findings from a judicial inquiry led by Senior Magistrate Ida Dookhy-Rambarun after the devastating floods on March 30, 2013, which resulted in 11 fatalities in the capital.

“Our primary concern has been with the merchants operating on the concrete surface of the Ruisseau du Pouce, who have now been relocated to the Gare du Nord and are conducting business successfully.

Many were questioning the status of KFC’s demolition, but that issue is now resolved,” Nujuraully added.

He clarified that the demolition work would take place on weekends and after regular business hours to minimize disruption.

In addition to the KFC building, reports also recommend the demolition of parking areas belonging to Air Mauritius and Rogers, located along the Ruisseau du Pouce.

“The Minister of Local Government is facilitating negotiations with both Rogers and Air Mauritius, and progress is being made.

The process with Rogers is slightly delayed due to equipment owned by the American Embassy at that location, but they are prepared to relocate within two to three months.

Air Mauritius is also on board, and we are in the final stages of finalizing the agreement,” Nujuraully explained.

While the KFC demolition proceeds, efforts will continue to remove the concrete surfaces of the Ruisseau du Pouce.

“Our objective is to clear La Poudrière Street of any obstacles that threaten public safety,” concluded the Lord Mayor.
