Tensions Erupt at Alliance Lepep Meeting in Petit-Raffray
Tensions ran high during a recent meeting of Alliance Lepep held in Petit-Raffray, located in constituency number 6 (Grand-Baie/Poudre-d’Or), as supporters voiced their outrage over the announcement of three new candidates. The gathering was meant to introduce these candidates to the community, but discontent quickly overshadowed the event.
The three individuals slated for candidacy are Sanjay Mooroocheea, Dr. Ranveersingh Kanyhe, and Nishal Jugnauth, a former magistrate and cousin of current Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
However, a significant number of local residents, staunch supporters of the Alliance Lepep, expressed their disappointment and anger, leading to a chaotic atmosphere.
Key figures within the party, including Maneesh Gobin, Avinash Teeluck, Joe Lesjongard, and Anjiv Ramdhany, found it necessary to leave the meeting hastily as tensions escalated.
As frustrations boiled over, they chanted, “Rann nou dokter…” (We demand our doctor…), advocating for the candidacy of Dr. Anjiv Ramdhany.
Many attendees insisted that the inclusion of new candidates was unwelcome in the region, emphasizing that if Ramdhany and Teeluck were not on the candidate list, the Alliance Lepep could expect a crushing defeat in the upcoming elections, potentially facing a 3-0 loss to their rivals, the Alliance du Changement.
One local activist declared, “Nou ki deside…” (We are the ones who decide…), underscoring the sentiment that community members should have a say in their candidates.
A smaller faction of activists also gathered, brandishing placards in support of Sudesh Rughoobur, a former elected representative from constituency number 6.
Ultimately, the wider meeting was canceled due to the unrest, reflecting the deep divisions within the party as it prepares for the upcoming electoral battle.
