Police Investigates Anti-Government Facebook Page Administrator

The Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) is currently working to identify one of the individuals responsible for the Facebook page titled “Sel Solution Revolution,” where users share their views on local politics. However, the majority of the posts have been critical of the government.

Authorities believe that some of these messages may be defamatory, especially as many users are engaging in discussions through comments.

As the election campaign season is approaching, the police aim to prevent the spread of rumors and disinformation, particularly concerning the ongoing political climate.

In light of this concern, they took action last weekend to apprehend the page’s administrator, Pravir Ramsoonder, who is also known by the nickname “Shakil.”

A team of around twenty members from the Police Headquarters Special Striking Team (SST) conducted a raid at his home and subsequently brought him to the CCID for questioning regarding alleged violations of the Information and Communication Technology Act.

During the interrogation, Ramsoonder clarified his role as an administrator, asserting that he cannot prevent Mauritians from expressing their opinions freely.

He maintained, however, that he should not be held responsible for the content of the messages or comments posted by others on the page.

After the questioning, he was released, but he must remain available for any further inquiries from investigators.

Meanwhile, the police are working to identify a second individual associated with the Facebook page, suspecting that this person is using a fake profile to disseminate additional anti-government messages that may also be defamatory.

An arrest in this regard is anticipated in the near future.
