Dissolution of Parliament: “A Relief” for Mauritians, Says Labour Party Leader

Navin Ramgoolam, leader of the Alliance du Changement, expressed his views on the recent dissolution of the National Assembly by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth during a press conference on Saturday morning, October 5. Ramgoolam described the decision as “a relief” for the Mauritian people and suggested it marks the beginning of the end for Jugnauth’s administration.
During his remarks, Ramgoolam emphasized the importance of democratic participation, asserting that every Mauritian now has the opportunity to determine the future of the country.
“There will be only one power: the power of your vote,” he stated, highlighting the critical role of citizens in the upcoming elections.
He noted that there are just 36 days left for Mauritians to “decide the future of our country, for our youth and future generations.”
On the topic of the Chagos Islands, both Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger voiced their approval of the recognition of Mauritius’ sovereignty by the United Kingdom and the United States.
However, Ramgoolam criticized Jugnauth for what he termed a “sell-out” regarding Diego Garcia, condemning it as an act of “high treason” against the Mauritian state.
“Do not sign any agreements with the British,” he warned.
Furthermore, Bérenger commented on the ongoing discussions with the party Rezistans ek Alternativ, acknowledging progress in their negotiations but indicating that issues surrounding the selection of a third candidate still need to be resolved.
He expressed hope that Rezistans ek Alternativ will join the Alliance du Changement.
Lastly, Ramgoolam confirmed his candidacy for Constituency No. 5 in the upcoming general elections, further solidifying his commitment to leading the opposition against the current government.
