Vehicle Purchase Irregularities at Mauritius Consulate in Dubai Exposed
In December 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved a budget of Rs 2.1 million for the purchase of a representation vehicle for the Mauritius Consulate General in Dubai. However, by June 2021, the ministry discovered that, in addition to the approved vehicle, the consulate had acquired a service vehicle without obtaining the necessary authorization.
This act was deemed a violation of established protocols.
It was only six months later, during the submission of the vehicle inventory, that the ministry became aware of the unauthorized purchase.
Moreover, there was a complete lack of transparency regarding the procurement procedures followed for acquiring the service vehicle.
Following directives from the ministry, the service vehicle was sold at a loss due to its depreciation by that time.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) criticized this situation as a blatant disregard for established procedures and highlighted a significant weakness in the ministry’s oversight of expenditures at its foreign missions.
