National Assembly Dissolved, Elections Scheduled for November 10
On Friday, October 4, the Office of the Presidency issued a statement announcing the dissolution of the National Assembly, as advised by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. The Nomination Day for candidates has been set for October 22, and the general elections will take place on November 10, 2024.
In a brief address to the nation lasting approximately two minutes, Prime Minister Jugnauth emphasized the significance of this electoral moment, stating, “We are heading towards another significant moment in our history. Every Mauritian will have the opportunity to vote and decide our future.”
He urged citizens to fulfill their civic duty and called for an electoral campaign conducted with order, discipline, and respect for democracy.
The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude to the members of his government and the support of the public.
The announcement marks a pivotal moment in Mauritian politics.
With the dissolution of Parliament, the path is now clear for the upcoming general elections set to occur on Sunday, November 10.
The deadline for candidate nominations is on Tuesday, October 22, with the counting of ballots and the official announcement of results scheduled for November 11.
It is also important to note that a by-election in Constituency No. 10 (Montagne-Blanche/GRSE), originally slated for October 9, has been canceled due to the parliamentary dissolution.
In total, 1,002,857 voters are expected to participate in this election, representing an increase of 61,138 voters compared to the 2019 elections.
Constituency No. 15 (La Caverne/Phoenix) has the highest number of registered voters, totaling 61,231, while Constituency No. 18 (Belle-Rose/Quatre-Bornes) follows with 60,795 voters.
In contrast, Constituency No. 2 (Port-Louis-Sud-Port-Louis-Centre) has the fewest registered voters, standing at 30,950.
The election will see two main alliances competing: the governing coalition led by Pravind Jugnauth’s MSM, which includes the Muvman Liberater, the Plateforme Militante, and the Muvman Patriote Morisien, potentially supported by the PMSD; and the Alliance du Changement, which consists of the Labour Party (PTr), the MMM, the New Democrats, and Rezistans ek Alternativ. Other participating parties include the Reform Party, Linion Moris, and the FSM, along with various independent candidates and extraparliamentary parties.
In the previous elections held on November 7, 2019, the Alliance Morisien (comprising MSM, Muvman Liberater, Plateforme Militante, and Muvman Patriote Morisien) secured 42 out of 60 seats with 37.67% of the vote.
The Alliance Nationale (PTr-PMSD-Mouvement Patriotique) won 14 seats (32.76%), while the MMM took 8 seats (20.57%). The Reform Party did not win any seats, garnering just 1.42% of the votes.
As the nation prepares for these crucial elections, the question remains: who will emerge victorious? The answer will be revealed on November 11.
