Hunger Strike for Improved Healthcare Services in Mahébourg

The Federation of Engaged Citizens, represented by spokesperson and village councilor Georges Ah Yan, is mobilizing today to demand improved healthcare services at the Mahébourg Hospital. A hunger strike is set to take place in front of the hospital as a form of protest.

According to Georges Ah Yan, the services provided by this hospital are inadequate for the needs of over 90,000 residents spread across more than 35 villages in the southern and southeastern regions of the island.

“The Mahébourg Hospital only operates until 4 PM. If a patient arrives after this time, they are forced to travel 19 kilometers to the Rose-Belle Hospital.

What happens in an emergency? A person could lose their life while waiting for this transfer,” he expressed.

In light of these concerns, Ah Yan has initiated a hunger strike in front of the hospital starting today.

“We are calling for an improvement in healthcare services through decentralization to eliminate disparities, particularly for dialysis patients. Those in the Flacq region do not face the same challenges that we do,” he pointed out.

Furthermore, Ah Yan stated that he will be reaching out to international organizations to seek their intervention with the Ministry of Health regarding these pressing issues.
