Concerns Raised by Lalit Over Chagos Sovereignty Announcement
Reactions have been swiftly forthcoming following the British announcement regarding the restoration of sovereignty over some islands in the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius. The political party Lalit has expressed significant concerns about the nature of this announcement, emphasizing that a crucial aspect of the statement warrants particular attention.
This concern centers around the British government’s decision to allow the continued operation of a military base on Diego Garcia for an extended period of 99 years.
In a statement released on Friday morning, October 4, Lalit vehemently remarked, “This could signify a relinquishment of our sovereignty.”
The party elaborated that the British government found itself in a quandary.
“Britain has been isolated. It was obliged either to decolonize all Chagos territories or face international backlash,” they stated.
Lalit also raised questions regarding a specific section of the agreement that was signed between the two governments, expressing unease over the implications this could have for Mauritius.
They argued, “Now, Lalit risks losing ground on all three fronts: sovereignty, decolonization, and military occupation.”
In contrast to these concerns, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth stated, on October 3, that he is proud of the UK’s recognition of Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos.
However, the situation remains complex and contentious as further developments unfold.
