Wage Adjustment: Business Mauritius Criticized for “Irresponsibility”
In a recent press conference held on Tuesday, September 24th, Minister of Labour Soodesh Callichurn condemned Business Mauritius for what he deemed their “irresponsibility” after the employers’ organization urged its members to refrain from implementing wage adjustments.
Callichurn questioned whether there might be a “hidden agenda” behind this stance, especially with general elections approaching.
He emphasized the legal obligation to adhere to the mandated wage adjustments, warning that failure to comply could lead to significant instability in the country.
The minister noted that unions have threatened a general strike if their demands are not met, raising concerns about potential disruptions in the workforce.
The situation has prompted a call for clarity and compliance in the lead-up to the elections, as Callichurn stressed the importance of respecting workers’ rights and ensuring fair compensation.
