On Sunday, September 22, the Alliance of Change gathered in Triolet, attracting a significant audience and a variety of speakers, including leaders from different political parties. Here are the highlights from the event:
Ranjiv Woochit: “It’s Time for This Government to Go”
The Member of Parliament for Pamplemousses-Triolet emphasized that the time has come for a new government.
“We have suffered enough under this administration,” he stated, referring to the depreciation of the rupee and the rising prices of essential goods.
Woochit, representing the Labour Party, criticized the General Social Contribution tax, labeling it as an unjust burden on the population.
Ram Etwareea: “The MSM Has Ruined the Country”
Speaking on behalf of the MMM in the Grand-Baie-Poudre-d’Or constituency, Etwareea claimed that under the MSM’s leadership, the country has deteriorated.
“We need change; the people are asking for it,” he declared. He expressed readiness among his party members to unite and rebuild the nation, warning that without change, prices would continue to rise.
Raj Pentiah: “Let’s Protect Our Children”
A member of the Labour from the Piton-Rivière-du-Rempart constituency, Pentiah urged attendees to safeguard their children’s future.
“Parents, you understand the struggles of raising a child,” he said, touching on critical issues such as healthcare, education, drug addiction, and the increasing cost of living.
Vinay Koonjul: “Fraud, Corruption, and Waste for a Decade”Koonjul, another member of the MMM from the same constituency as Pentiah, voiced concerns over the government’s track record, stating, “Our lives are becoming unbearable.
It’s all about fraud, corruption, and waste.” He called for unity to facilitate genuine change.
Amita Boolauky: “They Think They Can Buy Everything”
The president of the Women’s League within the Labour Party asserted that a transformative moment had arrived.
“We stand at a crossroads. This government believes that money can buy our conscience,” she said, emphasizing that the wealthy are becoming richer at the expense of the poor.
Anil Seeruttun: “Navin Ramgoolam Will Deliver the New Year’s Message”
Anil Seeruttun, a former candidate from MMM, expressed confidence in a successful alliance, predicting that “Navin Ramgoolam will deliver the traditional New Year’s message on January 1.”
He assured that by the end of the year, Mauritians would experience freedom in a politically fair environment.
Rajen Narsinghen: “You Have an Appointment with History”
Traveling across the country to speak at the Triolet meeting, Narsinghen proclaimed, “You are meeting history.
The uprising has concluded.” He referenced how peaceful protesters were violently arrested by police, emphasizing a growing discontent with the current government.
Kaviraj Rookny: “It’s Just Like 1995”
Rookny, a candidate from the Labour Party at constituency no. 5, likened the current gathering’s energy to the 1995 elections, forecasting a monumental victory.
“A 60-0 is coming. A new independence is on the horizon,” he said, expressing frustration with the prevailing dishonesty in politics.
Jyoti Jeetun: “A Decision for Our Children and the Country”
Originally from Triolet, the MMM candidate for Vacoas/Floréal discussed her motivation to enter politics, highlighting the imperative to act for the future of children and the nation.
“We all have a rendezvous with history,” she affirmed.
Mahend Gungapersad: “Your Presence Sends a Strong Signal”
The Labour Party MP remarked that the large turnout was a clear message to the government. “Those who support the mafia must leave,” he stated, invoking the need for the youth to thrive under new leadership.
He asserted that soon, Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger could be at the helm of the country.
Shakeel Mohamed: “Proud to Share the Stage with Navin Ramgoolam”
Mohamed, Labour Party MP, noted that PM Pravind Jugnauth had disqualified himself from leadership due to controversies enveloping his Deputy Prime Minister.
He questioned the integrity of the Deputy Prime Minister, who reportedly was unaware of an investigation involving his mother.
Ashok Subron: “ReA Should Be Included in This Alliance”
The spokesperson for Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) advocated for Kugan Parapen’s inclusion in the alliance, stressing that their collective strength lies in unity.
“We have a rendezvous with history,” he proclaimed, focusing on rights for workers, environmental protection, and promoting Mauritian values.
Richard Duval: “The Destiny of the Country is in Your Hands”
Duval, a member of the New Democrats, reminded attendees that these upcoming elections are pivotal.
“Your freedom and your children’s future are at stake,” he warned, asserting that the alliance’s diverse composition is its greatest strength.
The event encapsulated a growing call for change among various political factions, with each speaker contributing to an overarching narrative of dissatisfaction with the current government and a desire for a transformative future.
