Post-HSC: 24 New Scholarships Based on Social & Merit Criteria
The Ministry of Education announced yesterday the allocation of 24 state scholarships based on merit and social criteria, including two awarded to students from Rodrigues. These recipients ranked among the top 500 students on the Merit List for Rodrigues in the HSC 2023 examinations.
They also meet specific social criteria, as they come from families with monthly incomes not exceeding Rs 37,000 (16 scholarships) or Rs 18,500 (8 scholarships).
The criteria for these scholarships have been revised in light of the recent increase in the minimum wage.
The scholarships, which are available based on social and merit criteria, will enable students to pursue higher education at either public or private universities in Mauritius or abroad.
The financial support varies depending on the institution chosen by the student.
Those who decided to study at a university abroad are eligible to receive an annual sum of Rs 600,000, covering all expenses for a maximum duration of four years.
However, it is noteworthy that no scholarships will be provided for postgraduate degrees.
For students attending public universities in Mauritius—where education is tuition-free—a yearly allowance of Rs 150,000 will be granted for four years.
Students enrolling in private institutions will be entitled to tuition fees of up to Rs 225,000 annually for the same duration.
Given the funds allocated, domestic scholarship recipients may also receive support for a first year of master’s studies abroad or two years of master’s studies in Mauritius.
However, there is a specific provision for students pursuing medicine and related fields at institutions recognized by the Higher Education Commission, who will be eligible for study fees of Rs 225,000 over five years.
A critical concern is that these scholarships were awarded after the academic year had already begun in both Mauritius and overseas institutions.
One of the stipulations was that recipients must have already secured a place at a university.
