PM Announces Athlete Welfare Scheme to Support Sports Community

On September 17, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth emphasized the significance of sports in society during his speech at the inauguration of the Plaine-Verte Sports Arena. He took the opportunity to congratulate Mauritian athletes who participated in the Paris Paralympics, highlighting their impressive performances.

During the event, the Prime Minister revealed the introduction of the Athlete Welfare Scheme, a new initiative aimed at providing support to athletes.

He reminded attendees that the scheme is already operational and will cover medical expenses incurred by sportspeople requiring private healthcare services when these treatments are unavailable in public health facilities.

The scheme will reimburse up to Rs 250,000 for medical costs.

Additionally, the Athlete Welfare Scheme will reimburse 50% of the costs associated with purchasing or renting sports equipment needed for competition preparation, up to a maximum of Rs 50,000.

Furthermore, Jugnauth announced that injured athletes unable to work will receive financial support of Rs 120,000 distributed over a six-month period.
