John Mick Martingale was discovered hanging in his cell during the early hours of Sunday morning. His tragic death has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of suicide risk assessments within the prison system. In response, prison authorities have announced an internal investigation to review the protocols in place.

Martingale, 33, who was reportedly the mastermind behind the importation of a substantial consignment of liquefied cocaine valued at Rs 48 million in 2022, was found dead in his cell at the Beau-Bassin prison on September 8, 2024.

Authorities claimed that he displayed “no warning signs” leading up to this incident, which has prompted widespread scrutiny regarding the procedures used to evaluate the mental health of inmates.

The prison administration stated that Martingale had attended mass the previous day and had exhibited normal behavior.

They indicated that there were no indicators suggesting he would take such a drastic action.

However, this assertion raises significant concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death, the conditions of detention, and the psychological support available to high-risk inmates.

Questions have emerged regarding whether there were any visible signs of distress in Martingale’s behavior and whether a psychological evaluation had been conducted during his incarceration.

The internal investigation aims to determine if there were any failures in prisoner risk assessment protocols.

The prison administration has indicated that necessary changes will be implemented based on the findings of this inquiry.

Martingale’s body was discovered around 1:20 AM on Sunday. According to reliable sources, he used a piece of fabric from his mattress to create a makeshift noose, attaching it to a bar in his cell.

The grim discovery was made by a prison guard assigned to general duties during a routine morning patrol. At the time of his death, Martingale was housed in a single-occupancy cell.

Martingale’s arrest had garnered public attention due to his alleged involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation, which highlighted a complex international network.

Despite his continued denial of any wrongdoing, he remained at the center of the investigation and was awaiting trial.

The last recorded incident of a suicide in prison occurred in April 2020, involving a prisoner named Jean Alain Auguste, who was found hanged in his cell at Melrose prison while serving time for drug-related charges.
