After Phokeer, the Focus Shifts to Lee Shim
Following the dismissal of Sooroojdev Phokeer, the leader of the Mauritian Socialist Movement (MSM), Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth is now preparing to address another source of contention that has negatively impacted his popularity: Jean Michel Lee Shim. A radical decision is anticipated to facilitate Lee Shim’s exit from the historical Champ de Mars, paving the way for the Mauritius Turf Club (MTC) to make a strong comeback.
Like Phokeer, Lee Shim risks losing everything if he adopts an antagonistic stance towards his political patron.
As such, an escalation of tensions seems unlikely, and there are no signs of imminent conflict.
Lee Shim will most likely continue his various betting ventures, holding onto the hope that the political landscape will align with the demands of an upcoming electoral campaign.
If the MSM emerges victorious at the polls, he may still have opportunities to profit from his businesses.
It remained uncertain whether Champ de Mars will regain its former glory and whether crowds will return to watch horse races and place their bets.
Significant efforts will be needed to rectify the disruptions caused by Lee Shim’s presence at Champ de Mars, which will require substantial investments, particularly from the stables.
To facilitate the elimination of Lee Shim and reinstate the MTC’s operations, the government may provide considerable support to the relevant parties involved.
This move would be greatly aided by the current economic context, guided by the mantra “money is no problem.”
During the MTC’s halcyon days, the Champ de Mars was not merely a venue for horse racing and betting; it also served as a hub showcasing various social and cultural symbols that reflect the diverse characteristics of the Mauritian population.
