Mauritian Arrested with Cannabis Worth Rs 26.5 Million
Man has been arrested after authorities discovered 61 kilograms of cannabis, known locally as “zamal,” with an estimated street value of Rs 26.5 million. This significant seizure highlights the lucrative drug trade that operates between Mauritius and Réunion Island.
In August, law enforcement agencies in Réunion announced they had thwarted yet another attempt to export a large shipment of zamal to Mauritius.
Following a discreet investigation into the inter-island drug trafficking network, officers from the Saint-Benoît gendarmerie intercepted a van driven by the Mauritian suspect last month.
Inside the vehicle, police found the substantial quantity of cannabis, which was reportedly en route to Mauritius via maritime transport.
Following the initial arrest, a search was conducted at the alleged trafficker’s home, where authorities also uncovered firearms.
The investigation into the organized drug trafficking operations continues, and a second individual, the suspect’s half-brother who holds dual nationality, was taken into custody.
This second suspect was apprehended while preparing to board a flight to Mauritius.
During his court appearance in Réunion, he categorically denied any involvement in the drug trafficking, claiming his arrest was solely due to his Mauritian nationality.
Both men remain in custody on the island, as the Réunion gendarmerie, in collaboration with the Anti-Drug Office, intensifies its investigative efforts.
The seizure of 61 kg of zamal underscores the growing issue of drug trafficking between Mauritius and Réunion, as evidenced by the increasing number of arrests and confiscated shipments in recent times. This trend is highlighting the high profitability of the drug trade in the region.
