A recent viral video circulating on social media has ignited a heated debate after it allegedly showed a female student inhaling an unknown substance in the restrooms of a school in the Plaines-Wilhems region. Authorities were alerted early in the week and swiftly identified the 17-year-old girl featured in the footage.

Accompanied by her mother, she was summoned by the Family Protection Brigade (BPF) in Rose-Hill on Monday, September 2.

During her interrogation, the student explained that she was with two friends, aged 17 and 20, at the time of the incident.

She denied any claims that she was consuming drugs, stating, “We were just using tamarind candies.”

When questioned by BPF and drug enforcement officers, the student elaborated on their actions: “We crushed the tamarind candies with our cell phone to make it look like powder and pretended to use drugs,” she said.

The other two students involved were also interviewed by the police. During their testimonies, the BPF, led by Superintendent Ameeta Ramdour, took the opportunity to educate all three students about the dangers of drug use.

The BPF routinely conducted awareness sessions in primary and secondary schools, encouraging young people to adopt more responsible behaviors within society.

Additionally, after school hours, BPF officers are present at various bus stations across the country to provide guidance and support to youth.

Drug Presence in Schools Raises Concerns

The growing presence of drugs in educational institutions is increasingly worrying. Since August 27, school officials have confirmed reports of drug use and trafficking among students.

On September 2, the rector of a state college in the South called for the intervention of the anti-drug brigade after a 14-year-old Grade 8 student was caught with a quantity of cannabis, two cannabis seeds, a pair of scissors, and tobacco leaves.

Following this incident, the school official summoned the student’s father, and the boy was interrogated by the anti-drug brigade in his father’s presence before being allowed to return home.

This incident marked the fourth case of a student being apprehended by the anti-drug brigade within ten days.

On August 28, a 13-year-old student from a state college in the capital was caught with a cannabis cigarette.

The day before that, two Grade 9 students at a state college in the North were found in possession of cannabis.

The trend of drug involvement among students has raised alarm bells within educational communities, prompting institutions and authorities to take more proactive steps to address this pressing issue.
