Surge in Overdose Deaths: Social Workers Warn of an “Explosive Situation”
The country is witnessing a troubling increase in overdose deaths, prompting social workers to describe the scenario as “explosive.” The number of young victims continues to rise, raising alarms among those dedicated to combating drug-related issues.
According to the National Drug Secretariat, comprehensive data on overdose fatalities is compiled at the end of each year following analyses conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory.
However, frontline workers actively engaged in drug prevention efforts express significant concern regarding dangerous combinations of substances being trafficked, particularly in relation to “brown sugar” and synthetic drugs.
There is also growing apprehension regarding the potential presence of fentanyl, an extremely potent opioid that has wreaked havoc in several countries.
This situation has led social workers to call for enhanced collaboration between their organizations and government authorities in order to effectively address and mitigate the crisis.
