China-Africa Co-Production Films Set to Shine in Mauritius & DR Congo

Two exciting China-Africa co-productions are in development, aiming to engage Chinese audiences through compelling stories set in Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The films are set to begin filming next year and will showcase an array of locations across both China and Africa.

The African Film Association in China, under the leadership of Luc Bendza, is currently seeking funding to support these ambitious projects, which are expected to take two to three months to shoot.

The films, titled “Love in Mauritius” and “Terres D’Acier, Ames De Cristal” (translated to “Land of Steel, Souls of Crystal”), will premiere at the upcoming Guangzhou Film Industry Expo and Trade Fair in late September for pre-shoot exposure.

“Love in Mauritius” tells the story of a disheartened Chinese woman who travels to Mauritius in search of solace.

During her journey, she meets a kind-hearted man who becomes her emotional anchor, along with a Chinese love interest who works as a driving instructor on the island, introducing a layer of romantic tension.

Conversely, “Terres D’Acier, Ames De Cristal” explores the ramifications of the DRC’s abundant natural resources and how they affect lives both locally and abroad.

The narrative follows a Chinese language teacher who grapples with the stark realities of existence in the DRC.

Both films aiming to highlight unique elements of Chinese and African cultures while emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the two regions.

Luc Bendza has expressed optimism about receiving support from both Mauritius and China for “Love in Mauritius,” noting its potential to enhance tourism and cultural exchange.

Ultimately, these productions seek to strengthen cooperation between the Chinese and African film industries, fostering mutual understanding and the development of rich, narratives that resonate with audiences in both regions.

Bendza added that these projects will not only break down barriers but also inspire future collaborative efforts between filmmakers from China and Africa.
