In a tragic incident, 21-year-old Sohil Choytooa was found deceased beneath his car after being trapped for eight hours following a violent crash. Sohil, who had recently finished his naval studies, was set to celebrate his 22nd birthday in December. As his family mourns, questions surrounding police procedures and the circumstances of the accident linger.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 28, after Sohil left his home in Trou-D’Eau-Douce around 11:45 PM on Tuesday to drop off a friend in Flacq.

His father, Ajay Choytooa, a 52-year-old taxi driver, expressed his frustration over the police’s response.

“If the police had investigated the car, we could have saved my son’s life,” he stated.

“When I arrived at the scene around 12:10 AM, I started searching for my son, but the police told me not to touch anything. They acted as if the driver had simply abandoned the vehicle.”

Police arrived at the accident site shortly before midnight to find a heavily damaged car near a cane field, but they could not locate the driver.

A slippery roadway and a fallen sign suggested a sudden loss of control. It wasn’t until the following morning, around 8:20 AM, that police removed the wreckage and discovered Sohil’s body under the car.

Ajay lamented, “My son was trapped under the car from 11:50 PM to 8:20 AM.

I lost my son today; I am heartbroken.”

Ajay shared that he learned his son’s car may have skidded while attempting to avoid a motorcycle.

“I heard a motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction. When my son swerved to avoid it, that’s when the accident happened,” he explained.

After leaving home, Sohil’s family lost contact with him.

Initial investigations suggested Sohil might have exited the vehicle, especially after his cellphone was found on the main road.

Ajay questioned why the police did not pursue the motorcyclist who had been involved.

“If that motorcyclist had stayed nearby when we got there, they would have provided us with vital information.

If we had known my son was under the car, we would have demanded that a private tow truck come immediately,” he expressed, filled with regret.

With Sohil unaccounted for, concerned friends and family began their own search efforts at daybreak.

Sadly, their search ended in tragedy when they discovered the young man’s body. An autopsy revealed he had succumbed to “shock due to multiple injuries.”

Sohil was remembered by his father as a vibrant young man, well-loved and known for his joyful spirit.

Ajay, who has three children, including two daughters aged 26 and 24, described Sohil as sociable, often spending time with his cousins and friends.

“We had a wonderful family moment celebrating Rakhi recently. The entire Trou-D’Eau-Douce community loved him,” Ajay recalled.

Funeral arrangements for Sohil took place on August 29 amid grief from friends, family, and community members.

Meanwhile, the Belle-Mare police have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether Sohil was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
