In a recent ceremony held in Résidence Solitude, Steven Obeegadoo, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Housing and Lands, announced that over 3,000 houses are expected to be delivered before the end of the current government’s term in November.

He emphasized that no previous government has achieved such a milestone within a single term.

During the event, which took place on Thursday, 29 August, Obeegadoo presented keys to 18 families who will benefit from social housing projects developed by the National Housing Development Company (NHDC).

He noted that these projects are part of a broader initiative financed by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), with a total investment of Rs 53.8 million.

“Since December 2019, the NHDC has completed over 2,900 homes across 20 sites nationwide, with an additional 100 homes to be delivered soon. This means we will surpass the 3,000 threshold before our term ends,” Obeegadoo stated.

He highlighted that this achievement is unparalleled since 1995.

Soodesh Callichurn, the Minister of Labour and local MP, also attended the ceremony.

He underscored the significance of constructing 8,000 homes under the National Social Housing Development (NSLD) project, and he expressed gratitude for the financial support from the Saudi government and other friendly nations that have helped make this initiative possible.

“Despite the challenging economic landscape, the government has remained committed to fulfilling its promise to provide housing for those in need,” Callichurn remarked.

The Résidence Solitude project consists of 18 housing units built on state-owned land adjacent to the NHDC’s existing Résidence Le Solitaire.

This project, initiated on January 19, 2024, features 12 single-story homes and 6 single-story duplexes, with potential for future expansion to the upper floor.

Additionally, a Multipurpose Hall was inaugurated in the vicinity.

Obeegadoo also laid the foundation stone for another project involving the construction of 72 additional social housing units in the same area.

This new initiative, contracted to Square Deal Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd, will consist of three blocks of apartments, each containing 24 units across two floors.

Construction began on January 19, 2024, and is projected to be completed by March 14, 2025, with an overall investment of Rs 272.8 million from the SFD. Each housing unit will have a gross area of 73.3 square meters.
