Ramgoolam Reacts to Incidents in Côte-d’Or: Extraordinary Abuse of Power
In a strong rebuke, Navin Ramgoolam, leader of the Labour Party, described the events that unfolded in Côte-d’Or on Tuesday, August 27, as “an extraordinary abuse of power.” Speaking to reporters after visiting Rajen Narsinghen, who is currently hospitalized at Wellkin, Ramgoolam expressed his grave concerns about the erosion of democratic principles.
In a statement, Ramgoolam emphasized, “We no longer live in a democracy,” highlighting the troubling nature of the police’s actions during the recent protests in Côte-d’Or.
The incidents began when Rajen Narsinghen, a legal advisor to the movement “Rann nou later,” was forcibly taken away by police during a demonstration by movement members.
He sustained injuries during the encounter and was subsequently admitted to Wellkin Hospital for treatment.
Three other protestors—Devarajen Kanaksabee, Kissen Gangadoo, and Vela Gounden—were also detained but were released later that evening.
This confrontation occurred shortly before Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth arrived for a ceremony to present lease contracts to the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust, as well as to the Hindi Speaking Union and the Urdu Speaking Union.
Narsinghen and other leaders of the movement are demanding the return of land previously granted to the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust in Réduit, contesting the alternative site offered in Côte-d’Or.
The ongoing tensions surrounding this issue is reflecting deeper divisions within the community and raise questions about governance and civil rights in the country.
