Arbitrary Arrest Claims: Police Detain 4 “Rann Nou Later” Movement Members
In a tense turn of events this afternoon, four members of the “Rann Nou Later” movement were taken into custody by police during a demonstration in Côte-d’Or. Opposition leader Arvin Boolell condemned the actions of law enforcement, branding them as “brutal” and “arbitrary arrests.”
Boolell visited the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Moka to express his solidarity with the detainees.
Among those arrested was Rajen Narsinghen, who was reportedly injured during his apprehension and was taken to Wellkin Hospital in Moka at approximately 5:30 PM.
He stated that he sustained injuries while interacting with police after the arrest of fellow protester Devarajen Kanaksabee.
Additionally, two other activists—Kissen Gangadoo and Vela Gounden—were also arrested during the demonstration and are currently being held at the CID in Moka.
Their legal representatives, Rouben Mooroongapillay, Veda Baloomoody, and Rubna Daureawoo, were present at the police station to provide support.
The confrontations unfolded just moments before Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth arrived for a contract signing ceremony at the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust, held at the Hindi Speaking Union and Urdu Speaking Union.
Narsinghen, along with other leaders of the “Rann Nou Later” movement, is demanding the return of land previously allocated to the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust in Réduit.
The group’s members rejected an alternative site proposed in Côte-d’Or, leading to heightened tensions and ultimately to today’s protest and subsequent police intervention.
