Police Intervene During “Rann nou later” Protest in Côte-d’Or
On Tuesday afternoon, August 27, Devarajen Kanaksabee, along with two other members of the “Rann nou later” movement, was arrested by police while participating in a demonstration in Côte-d’Or. This incident was captured on video, which can be viewed in the accompanying footage.
Shortly thereafter, Rajen Narsinghen, a former lecturer, was forcibly taken into custody by police while addressing reporters regarding Kanaksabee’s arrest.
Narsinghen, along with other leaders of the movement, is advocating for the return of land previously allocated to the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust in Réduit.
They are opposed to an alternative site that has been proposed in Côte-d’Or.
The protest escalated with police interventions, leading to multiple arrests, including that of Kanaksabee.
This occurred just before the arrival of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who was scheduled to attend a ceremony for the signing of lease contracts at the Tamil Cultural Centre and at the Hindi and Urdu Speaking Unions.
