3 Reasons Rodrigues Outsmarts Mauritius in Food Supply Crisis

The significant influx of tourists in Mauritius has been cited as one of the primary factors contributing to the ongoing shortages of eggs and chicken on the island. Reports suggesting that cruise ships docking in Port-Louis are purchasing a large portion of the local poultry production to cater to their passengers.

The repercussions of this shortage have been felt across various regions of the country, prompting the government to allow the importation of chicken to meet local demand.

This situation arised against a backdrop of declining agricultural productivity.

There has been a noticeable decrease in crop cultivation, with sugarcane fields remaining unharvested, and even when harvested, the sugarcane is not transported to processing facilities.

Many vegetables that were once plentiful have become scarce and increasingly expensive.

In stark contrast, the situation in Rodrigues, the second island of the Republic, painted a different picture.

Rodrigues has also welcomed a growing number of tourists, including many from the main island of Mauritius and France.

Notably, the local population has managed to meet the demands of these visitors without fully exhausting their own resources.

Instead of facing a crisis that necessitates importing eggs, chicken, fish, and vegetables, the Rodriguan residents are successfully exporting certain food products to Mauritius.

Furthermore, there are plans to resume the export of livestock from Rodrigues following a health-related interruption.

Given the impressive resourcefulness of the Rodriguan community, an important question is being raised: Why not allow the people of Rodrigues to take leadership roles in certain ministries on the main island in the interest of national unity?

Such a collaboration could lead to improved agricultural practices and help achieve optimal production levels of vegetables, fruits, fish, eggs, chicken, and various meats.

As Mauritius grappling with food shortages, looking to Rodrigues for solutions and fostering cooperation could significantly benefit both islands.
