Call to the Ballot: General Elections Expected Before December 10

The question on everyone’s mind is: When will the general elections take place? Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, the only person with the authority to set the election date, has not provided any concrete information. He has only stated that he intended to complete his term, but insiders suggesting that the elections will definitely occur before December 10.

According to a Defi Media’s source close to the Sun Trust, “Serious preparations will begin in October, aiming for elections before December 10.”

The potential election dates of December 3 and December 8 have been identified as favorable options.

Additionally, holding the general elections in November is another strong possibility, with specific dates such as November 7 and November 17 frequently mentioned.

It is important to note that the government’s legal term concludes on November 21, after which the National Assembly would automatically be dissolved.

It is widely anticipated that Parliament will be dissolved before October 9, prior to the scheduled partial election for Constituency No. 10, which covers Montagne-Blanche and Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est.

This upcoming election is a result of Vikram Hurdoyal’s resignation in mid-February following his dismissal as Minister of Agro-Industry. However, it is highly likely that due to the political climate, this partial election will not take place.

Legally, there must be a minimum of one month between the dissolution of Parliament and the holding of general elections.

According to the school exam calendar, there is a window for candidacy submissions from October 4 to October 14.

However, this period will coincide with festivities for Durga Puja, which may pose challenges.

Additionally, the last secondary exams—namely the School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC)—are scheduled to conclude on November 15 and November 14, respectively.

The Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC) exams will have already been completed by that time.

After November 15, schools and colleges will be available to serve as polling stations.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes are on the government’s next moves and the impending elections.
