Absa Launches Financial Literacy Program for Persons with Disabilities
In a significant move towards financial inclusion, Absa Mauritius has initiated a Financial Literacy Program in response to calls from the Global Rainbow Foundation (GRF) in 2022. Jennifer Johnson, the bank’s Head of Marketing and Institutional Relations, along with Julian Tarbox, highlighted the urgent need to enhance financial knowledge among individuals with disabilities, helping them achieve greater financial independence.
The new program is aiming to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge that will empower them to manage their finances autonomously.
It covers a variety of essential topics, including everyday banking practices, the use of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), understanding financial terminology, and an introduction to foundational financial products such as credit cards and mortgages.
Importantly, the content will be tailored to address the diverse needs of participants with different types of disabilities, ensuring that the program is inclusive and accessible to all.
The development of this awareness initiative marks a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between Absa Mauritius and the Global Rainbow Foundation.
Since its establishment on November 11, 2011, the GRF has focused on assisting the most vulnerable groups, with a particular emphasis on individuals facing challenges due to various disabilities.
“As a banking institution, we have a responsibility to foster inclusion and support financial empowerment,” said Cedrine Chimon Rampal, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Absa Mauritius.
“The Financial Literacy Program provides a valuable opportunity to help individuals with disabilities acquire the skills they need to manage their finances both independently and securely.”
Julian Tarbox, the Project Manager at the Global Rainbow Foundation, also emphasized the significance of this initiative.
He stated, “The creation of this Financial Literacy Program represents a major advancement in our mission to ensure the full empowerment of individuals with disabilities.
This collaboration with Absa Mauritius allows us to provide essential skills to participants, which will have a meaningful and lasting impact on their lives.”
Absa’s Financial Literacy Program is a testament to the commitment of both the bank and the Global Rainbow Foundation to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals, ultimately fostering a more inclusive society.
