Mauritius’ Disability Rights Report Set for UN’s Review
The 31st session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities commenced in Geneva this week. Mauritius is set to present its report, which will be evaluated on August 26 and 27. The Committee will review the current situation in relation to the recommendations made during the previous session, and new recommendations will be issued aimed at improving conditions for individuals living with disabilities.
A significant highlight of the presentation by Mauritian authorities will be the Disability Act, which was passed by the National Assembly in April of this year.
Additionally, the establishment of the Special Education Needs Authority (SENA) will also be showcased.
During the last session, the Committee had raised concerns regarding the excessive reliance of the State on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the education of children with disabilities.
The Committee recommended that the government take the necessary steps to provide quality and inclusive education, in accordance with the principles outlined in the Convention.
Having ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Mauritius is obligated to adhere to these recommendations.
Consequently, evaluations are conducted at each session to ensure that the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities in Mauritius are upheld.
