In Albion, illegal waste dumping has become a pervasive issue, severely impacting remote natural areas amidst the underbrush, on cliff sides, and occasionally around the local lighthouse. This troubling situation came to light this week along the well-known pathway frequented by walkers, connecting Albion to Montagne Jacquot.

Local residents encountered a disturbing accumulation of garbage, which included fabric, paper, bags filled with household waste, sleeping bags, tires, and more.

These illegal dump sites not only contain conventional refuse but also feature significant piles of construction debris.

Such acts are particularly disheartening given that the legal waste disposal facility, La Chaumière, is just a short drive away.

This flagrant disregard for the community reflects a broader pattern of incivility.

Residents expressed frustration over the situation. “This is where we come to engage in our sport and connect with a preserved natural environment.

Yet, unscrupulous contractors chose to dispose of their construction waste here without facing any consequences,” lamented one local.

The Kolektif Ekolozik d’Albion, an environmental group, has repeatedly raised alarms concerning the upsurge in these acts of incivility by sharing increasingly shocking photographs of the construction debris scattered across the area.

The scale of these illegal dumps suggested the involvement of professional construction firms, not just individuals acting alone.

Typically, those responsible for these offensive practices operate out of sight. However, two years ago, a truck driver was caught in the act by passersby just a short distance from the lighthouse.

Photos showed the man exiting his truck and unloading a container filled with construction waste without a second thought.

In a stroke of misfortune for him, his license plate was clearly visible in the photographs.

The Environmental Police confirmed that he was subsequently fined Rs 25,000 for his infraction.

As the issue worsens, local residents and environmental advocates continue to call for action to address the growing threat of illegal dumping in Albion and to protect the area’s natural beauty for future generations.
