Jagadisen Rungadoo Appointed Commissioner of Prisons
Jagadisen Rungadoo has officially been appointed Commissioner of Prisons, a position he has held in an acting capacity since December 2020. His interim term lasted three and a half years, following the departure of former Commissioner Mario Nobin. Rungadoo’s official confirmation came in July of this year, but it is noted that his current contract lasts for only six months, set to expire in December.
At 65 years old, Rungadoo brings an impressive 43 years of experience in the corrections field.
Colleagues regard him as a “rigorous and dedicated professional,” well-equipped to tackle the myriad challenges faced within the prison system.
Although he was approached for comments, Rungadoo was reportedly “in committee with his staff.”
This appointment is marking a significant milestone in the corrections sector, as it is the first time an officer from within the prison service has been promoted to the rank of Commissioner.
“This is a great honor for the prison community, and we are very proud,” stated a representative from his team.
Rungadoo’s confirmation as Commissioner came at a pivotal moment for the prison system, which is undergoing significant changes aimed at enhancing living conditions for inmates and bolstering rehabilitation programs.
The Prisons Officers Association (POA) has presented various requests, including the hiring of senior officials for positions such as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Superintendent of Prisons, and additional welfare officers.
They have also called for improved security equipment for prison guards.
Additionally, it has been reported that the prison administration has initiated a tender process for the recruitment of a pest control and debugging unit.
“Our requests are making progress, and we appreciate the new Commissioner’s attentiveness,” a POA representative conveyed.
