A Passionate Ecology Advocate, Shreeya Crowned Miss Earth Mauritius 2024
Daughter of Asvin Bokhoree, the CEO and founder of Chartreuse Group, Shreeya grew up surrounded by tea plantations, nurturing a deep desire to actively contribute to environmental protection. Shreeya Luxmi Bokhoree, crowned Miss Earth Mauritius, is committed to using her title to benefit the planet. Her participation in the Miss Earth Mauritius pageant reflects her strong connection to her family’s business and her love for nature.
Through this platform, she is aiming to promote sustainability and responsible environmental management.
“I have always dreamed of participating in a beauty pageant, but not just any pageant.
I was drawn to Miss Earth because of its mission, and since ecology is a cause close to my heart, I decided to take the plunge,” Shreeya shared.
In addition to her pageant pursuits, Shreeya is a dedicated dance student, specializing in classical Indian dance.
Currently in her third year of PR Branding & Advertising at Middlesex University, she also works within the public relations and communication department of her family business.
A graduate of the International Baccalaureate from Le Bocage School, Shreeya has demonstrated her commitment to environmental sustainability and leadership by serving as the president of the eco-school Green Initiative LBIS for two years.
Shreeya’s professional journey began at an early age, as she regularly interned at Chartreuse Group during school holidays.
“It was only natural for me to join my father’s company. I study part-time while working full-time in the family business.
Growing up among tea fields, agriculture and nature are integral to my life. Protecting them is both crucial and urgent,” she explained.
Despite the competitive nature of the pageant, Shreeya admited she did not expect to win the crown.
“I must admit, the other contestants were highly talented, making it difficult to gauge my chances. However, I had confidence in my advocacy and believed the other candidates were equally deserving,” she reflected.
In her advocacy work, Shreeya chose to highlight Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, titled “Life on Land.”
This goal is emphasizing the protection of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable forest management, combating desertification, and conserving biodiversity to ensure healthy ecosystems and the survival of terrestrial species.
“Promoting sustainable management of all types of forests, halting deforestation, restoring degraded forests, and increasing reforestation efforts is urgent.
I truly believe we can achieve this if everyone pitches in. It is essential to launch awareness campaigns, and I am committed to doing so,” she asserted.
Shreeya also addressed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, “Life Below Water,” which focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
“Being on an island, this issue should resonate directly with us. We need to reduce marine pollution. Many people do not realize the damage caused to the ocean when we throw waste into the water,” she emphasized.
Furthermore, she discussed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production,” which aims to establish sustainable consumption and production patterns.
She highlighted the importance of protecting bees, noting, “Bees are essential for humanity’s survival due to their crucial role in pollinating food crops, maintaining biodiversity, supporting agricultural economies, and producing honey products.
Their decline could have disastrous consequences for global food security and ecosystem health. Therefore, it is vital to protect bee populations to ensure a sustainable future for humanity.”
For Shreeya, engaging in environmental advocacy as Miss Earth goes beyond mere words; it necessitates concrete actions.
Already working within her family business, she sees this as a valuable opportunity to implement significant initiatives.
“Using a paper straw is a step in the right direction, but it’s not sufficient to protect our environment.
We need to move beyond symbolic gestures. It is crucial to maintain constant efforts and implement long-term solutions, especially among us, the youth,” she asserted.
She believes radical solutions are not the answer, acknowledging that lifestyle changes can be challenging.
However, integrating sustainable practices into daily life is essential, and she envisions several projects to achieve this aim.
“It’s necessary to start at schools and community centers to explain the scope of the SDGs.
We must raise awareness among young people about the importance of eco-friendly actions and launch social media campaigns to boost awareness,” Shreeya explained.
To kick off her initiatives, she plans to incorporate sustainable principles within her family business.
“I aim to implement ecological practices that will have a real impact and foster a culture of sustainability within the company.
Being in this field, I want to bring together various stakeholders from the industry around environmental issues,” she revealed.
Outside her professional and environmental commitments, Shreeya engaged in several personal passions.
She is an experienced Bharatanatyam dancer, even teaching the art form to others.
Art is another significant interest for her. “I have always had a passion for art, particularly painting, which I use as a means to relax and decompress.
I studied art in high school, allowing me to develop a greater appreciation for it. I love exploring museums when I travel to analyze different works and their deep meanings,” she added.
During weekends, Shreeya enjoys baking, a cherished activity she shares with her family. “It’s a fun time we share together,” she explained.
Shreeya Luxmi Bokhoree competed alongside Candice Françoise in the Miss Earth International 2024 competition.
