Mauritius Hosts ATAF Training to Enhance Skills of 68 Tax Professionals

In July 2024, the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) concluded its advanced tax audit course, a pivotal part of its blended training program held at the Integrated Customs Clearance Centre (ICCC) in Plaine Magnien, Mauritius.

This intensive course aimed to provide participants with a robust understanding of tax audits, equipping them to tackle sophisticated tax-related issues and specialized sectors.

The advanced course marked the final stage in ATAF’s comprehensive training initiative, which is designed to enhance the capabilities of tax administrators across Africa.

Through an in-depth exploration of tax auditing complexities, participants gained valuable insights into essential tax principles, supported by a series of real-world case studies.

The curriculum aimed to strengthen the foundations for conducting effective tax audits, with a particular focus on critical areas such as Value-Added Tax (VAT), Personal Income Tax (PIT), and Corporate Income Tax (CIT).

This session brought together 68 participants from thirteen African nations, including Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Madagascar, Morocco, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The diverse representation underscored a collaborative effort to improve tax audit practices continent-wide.

A significant aspect of the course was its emphasis on auditing specialized sectors.

By providing a thorough understanding of the value chain in select industries, the training aiming to prepare participants for the unique challenges they may encounter in different economic activities.

This sector-specific focus is crucial for the development of tailored audit strategies that address the diverse landscape of tax compliance and revenue generation.

The blended tax audit program is organized into three progressive levels—basic, intermediate, and advanced—each of which is examinable.

This structure not only ensured that participants gain essential knowledge but also enabled them to demonstrate their competencies in tax auditing effectively.

With this advanced training, participants are now better equipped to face the real-world challenges of tax administration, ultimately contributing to improved tax compliance and governance across the African continent.
